Twin Solex carburetors brought improved performance to the 1500 S models of 1964-65 while increased engine displacement inspired 1966s 1600 models which also traded front drum brakes for discs. The car was then internally designated the Volkswagen Type 1 and marketed simply as the Volkswagen.
